Hi everybody,

At Tamarack, we talk a lot about AI and, during the warmer months, also spend a fair amount of time talking about fishing!

June is one of the best times to fish smallmouth bass in the upper Midwest. I recently had a fun experience with my grandson – the little guy – that caused me to think about how AI might change how he’ll bass fish in the future. The details are found in a longer post here, but like most applications of AI, it all starts with understanding that there are two types of AI: generative and operational.

Generative AI is demonstrated by platforms like ChatGPT and DALL-E: algorithms that can generate new content of various types. At this point, these platforms are risky because the data upon which they are trained is often unknown, and the algorithms appear to put more emphasis on answering the question than answering it correctly. See the “South Dakota Governors” test as a scary example of generative AI.

Perhaps my experience building control systems helps me see it clearly, but operational AI does not scare me. This form of AI helps improve operations by building models using historical data to predict future outcomes. Good outcomes are pursued more diligently, and bad ones – the ones that contain risk – are avoided. The methods of developing and using operational AI are more transparent and easier to validate.

Whether you are going fishing or running an equipment finance company, give us a call. We love talking about both!

Customer sync in Solifi’s Originations and Portfolio Management Systems

Customer record changes in Solifi’s Originations (formerly Rapport) and Portfolio Management (formerly InfoLease) systems are designed to automatically synchronize on a real-time basis. However, there are times when the customer records do not synchronize regularly as they are saved. In this Trail Mix installment, we walk through how to solve the issues when sync errors occur.

Tamarack goes to the Capitol

Last month, Tamarack’s Daniel Nelson and Andrew Hedstrom traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the annual Equipment Leasing and Finance Association Capitol Connections program. Alongside other ELFA members, they met with legislators to discuss the key issues facing the industry. In this blog post, they share their takeaways from the experience.

How AI will make “the little guy” a better fisherman

Since Scott Nelson was 5 years old, he has spent most of his summers either fishing or finding a way to go fishing. On a recent trip with his grandson, he began thinking on how much technology affects both how we fish and how many fish we catch. In this fishing-inspired blog post, Nelson ponders how AI could be used to help the duo catch more (and bigger) fish.

Rethinking how AI can address shifting CFO concerns

AI is changing the way risks of all types are identified and managed across all parts of the equipment finance industry. But is your organization ready to use AI to help navigate the choppy waters created by shifting economic trends? In the March/April issue of the NEFA Newsline, Tamarack’s Tim Appleget and Scott Nelson dive into a discussion about why CFOs should support an investment in data and digital technology (like AI) to help with operational concerns as well as to improve workflow and reduce labor costs.
